Congrats to Harness Racing Trainer Ron Burke on a Record Breaking Year

Harness Trainer Ron Burke

It’s been a record-breaking year for harness racing trainer Ron Burke and the Burke Racing Stable.

In November, Burke became the first Standardbred trainer in history to reach 1,000 wins in a season, eclipsing his own 2012 record of 906 wins. Burke finished the year with 1090 wins, and set a new record for earnings this year — an impressive $22 million-plus record from winning purses. He also won the U.S. Harness Writers Association Award for best trainer in 2013. Congratulations to Ron Burke!

Burke, a racing legacy who took the lead role in the Burke stables from his father in 2009, has led all North American trainers in both wins and earnings for five straight years. His father, Mickey, started the racing operation in 1982. He built an impressive program up from the ground, creating a family legacy that is continued by his five children.

Here at Freedom Health, we’ve watched the Burke family’s ascendance in the racing world since 2005, when Mickey Burke became one of our original SUCCEED-sponsored trainers. Mickey and Ron originally put three horses on a 60-day trial of SUCCEED. In a later interview with the Burkes, Mickey remarked “Fifteen days after we started the trial we saw a day and night difference.”

D9FC0301 ccRon Burke said, “We noticed that we could get more quality starts. They started to look better, then they started racing better.”

And they continued racing better. The Burkes put nearly all of their horses on SUCCEED after the successful trial, and broke into the Top 10 in the Meadowlands trainer standings for the first time in 2005. The Burke Stable has been on top ever since.
